Your home's wiring works hard, quietly and out of sight, every single day. But it doesn't last forever. If your house hasn't been rewired in decades, the cabling may no longer be safe for the demands of a modern home.
Here are seven of the most common signs that it's time to call an electrician about a rewire.
1. Your fuse board has rewireable fuses
If your fuse board still uses old-style wire fuses rather than modern circuit breakers and RCDs, it's a strong sign the whole installation is dated and lacks modern safety protection.
2. The wiring is rubber, fabric or lead-insulated
Cabling insulated with rubber, fabric or lead was phased out decades ago. If you spot it in your attic or under floors, it has almost certainly degraded and should be replaced.
3. Frequent tripping or blown fuses
The occasional trip is normal. Repeated tripping usually points to overloaded or failing circuits that can't cope with modern demand.
4. Scorch marks, buzzing or burning smells
Discoloured sockets, a faint burning smell or buzzing from switches are serious warning signs. Stop using the affected circuit and call an electrician straight away.
5. Not enough sockets
If your home relies on extension leads and adaptors, the wiring was designed for a different era. A rewire is the chance to add the sockets you actually need.
6. You're renovating or extending
Renovations are the ideal time to rewire: walls and floors are already open, keeping disruption and cost down.
7. You're buying or selling
Older properties often need a rewire to be safe and saleable. A certified installation reassures buyers, insurers and surveyors alike.
What to do next
